Portfolio Company Piclo joins forces with Northern Powergrid to tackle the decarbonisation of the grid.

08 August 2023

Electricity distribution network operator Northern Powergrid has been announced as the latest manager of flexibility services procurement on Piclo Flex in the effort to decarbonise the grid.

This two-year partnership will see Northern Powergrid operating in Northeast Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire overseeing bidding for long-term contracts and building a network of flexibility service providers as well as procuring flexibility services.

Beginning in 2024, Northern Powergrid will hold competitions for flexibility services, and then go on to seek expressions of interest in offering flexibility services in additional locations beginning in 2027.

Since 2019, Piclo has been working on the end-to-end functioning of its marketplace. Piclo Flex now has 1.1GW of flexibility registered from over 400 flexibility service providers, which is utilised to plug more power back into the grid in times of constraint.

James Johnston, CEO at Piclo, conveyed his enthusiasm, remarking,

We are thrilled to be working with Northern Powergrid…This collaboration marks an exciting milestone for Piclo, and we look forward to working closely with Northern Powergrid to achieve shared success and strive towards our goal of fully decarbonising the grid.”
